Clayton Public Schools is proud to announce that Mary Ellen Walker, school counselor at Herma S. Simmons Elementary School, has been selected as the Gloucester County School Counselor of the Year by the New Jersey School Counselor Association (NJSCA).
The Counselor of the County award recognizes school counselors across New Jersey who have made significant contributions to their students, schools, and the counseling profession.
At Herma S. Simmons Elementary School, Mrs. Walker plays a vital role in supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of Clayton’s youngest learners. Through her compassionate approach and dedication to student well-being, she helps students build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop the skills they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom. Her commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive school environment has made a meaningful impact on students, families, and staff throughout the Clayton school community.
Mrs. Walker will be recognized at the 40th Annual NJSCA Professional Recognition Awards Luncheon on March 24, 2026, at The College of New Jersey.
“Mary Ellen’s compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to students make her truly deserving of this recognition,” said Superintendent Nikolaos Koutsogiannis. “We are incredibly proud to have her serving the students and families of Clayton.”
